5 new restaurants to look forward to in 2017
New Year, new restaurants ... to look forward to. Some interesting restaurants have opened in the past few months: The Barrow House in Clifton, T.S. Ma in Wyckoff, Izakaya Hontei in Palisades Park and Viaggio in Wayne. But what's in store for 2017? Here are a few that we're eager to try as soon as their doors officially open.
AZÚCAR CUBAN CUISINE AND CIGARS
Closter
Chef Nicholas Vasquez expects his restaurant, Azúcar Cuban Cuisine, to open soon, something that he's been saying more or less since August. But he promises that any day now his restaurant, which seats 135, will finally open. What you can expect: a lounge by the bar, with lots of Cuban reading material, a salsa band on the weekends, a man rolling cigars at a special table, a table where dominoes can be played, palm trees with dried fronds, a private dining room and, of course, Cuban food. On the menu: shrimp tapas cooked in garlic ($10); grilled Black Angus filet mignon bathed in a spicy guava and fruit sauce ($25); 24-hour marinated then grilled rib-eye ($34); deep-fried pork chops served with sweet plaintains ($19); and, of course, a pressed Cuban sandwich, the sandwich with which Vasquez beat Bobby Flay in Food Network's "Throwdown." The sandwich consists of roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, thinly sliced pickles and mayo. And mojitos, of course. Plus lots of rum drinks, beer, etc.
Look for Vasquez's black 1959 Chrysler parked in the front. A very Cuban touch.

DELANEY CHICKEN
Paramus
Chicken lovers rejoice: Delaney Chicken, the counter-serve spot in a midtown Manhattan food hall, is slated to open sometime this winter in Garden State Plaza. The chef, Daniel Delaney, is a New Milford native. On the menu: chicken, of course, as in the original chicken sandwich with house pickles and hot sauce ($8); spicier chicken sandwich with Havarti cheese and pickled jalapeños ($10); and fried chicken club with house-smoked bacon and herb mayo ($12). Like something with your chicken sandwich? No problem: There's coleslaw ($5), potato salad ($5) and mac and cheese ($7). To drink? Abita root beer ($5) and Abita beer ($7), plus lemonade and sodas.

PHORAGE ON THE HUDSON
Edgewater
Chef and restaurateur James Wang owns a Vietnamese-Thai restaurant in Morris Plains called Lemongrass, so why not open another in Edgewater? Phorage on the Hudson is scheduled to start serving pho and other Vietnamese and Thai dishes in mid-February. Wang, whose parents immigrated from Vietnam, said the new location will be a bit more upscale than Lemongrass, which serves Vietnamese-style salmon, Tiger shrimp with tomatoes and, of course, pad thai. Wang said Phorage will serve family recipes with a modern twist and use sustainable, local-when-possible ingredients at the BYOB. Phorage seats 90 and, come warmer weather, 30 more outdoors. And since it's on River Road, there are views of the river and Manhattan skyline.

REILLY'S RIB CAGE
Bergenfield
Reilly’s Rib Cage, a Southern barbecue joint, has just opened its doors in the space that formerly housed Kimchi Smoke. Dan Reilly with his father, James, are the forces behind this establishment, which prides itself on its high-quality smoked meats. For his restaurant, Dan, a River Edge resident, purchased a $16,000 smoker, which he feeds with hickory and cherry wood. His beef is GMO-free, his chicken free-range and pork organic. On the menu: pulled pork sandwich ($11); smoked chicken wings (6 for $7); Southern whole bird sandwich ($11); bacon-wrapped brisket jalapeño popper (4 for $8); and homemade banana bread pudding ($5). Everything is made fresh every day, including the pineapple Hennessy BBQ sauce; all leftovers will be donated to a local food charity.
The restaurant is open from 12 to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
Where: 49 W. Church St., Bergenfield.
CINAR RESTAURANT AND BAR
Emerson
Cinar's first location is in Cliffside Park. Its second: West Caldwell. And now it's set to open its third restaurant in Emerson. And if it's as good as those restaurants, Turkish food lovers – actually food lovers in general – are in for a treat. The Record gave the Cliffside Park location three out of four stars, with shout-outs for its thick pitas, Cinar tomato salad, mixed kebab platter, manti (Turkish ravioli) and kazandibi milk pudding and baklava. But that restaurant doesn't have a liquor license. This one does, said bar manager Samed Guvenc. The Cinar in Emerson, he reported, will be more like the West Caldwell location – a bit more formal than the one in Emerson but "still authentic Turkish food." The restaurant will seat 200, he said, and is slated to open before Valentine's Day.
Azúcar Cuban Cuisine opens for business CLOSTER — Azúcar Cuban Cuisine is officially open for business, with a soft opening that began Tuesday and a grand opening slated for Jan. 26. The restaurant, which seats 135 people, is open from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. during its soft opening and offers a full menu, says Nicholas Vazquez, manager of Azúcar along with his sister, Lauren. Their father, Nicholas Vazquez Sr., is the chef. The grand opening will run from 5 to 8 p.m. in the restaurant’s bar and lounge, with Cuban-inspired drinks and tapas. Before opening in Closter, Azúcar was once located in Edgewater and later in Jersey City for about 10 years. The new Closter location, on Schraalenburgh Road, offers bands and dancing on the weekends and a private dining room for family celebrations. 5 new restaurants to look forward to in 2017 Azúcar tries to emulate the feeling of being in a “tropical getaway,” Vazquez says. “We really...
Joining forces at Azucar, a Cuban restaurant in Closter Nick Vasquez had it all figured out. The Cuban-born chef and restaurateur had planned to eventually give his 22-year-old business to his son Nicky. "I always thought he would take over," said Vasquez, an outgoing, 56-year-old River Vale resident. Not just because his son, 25, earned a college degree in hospitality management but also because his daughter Lauren, 29, didn't seem to have any interest in going into the family business, dreaming instead of becoming an English teacher. "I loved to read and to write," she said. Today father and daughter work side by side at the 5-month-old Azucar Cuban Cuisine and Cigars in Closter, where she is the owner and general manager, and he is the "chef, dishwasher and toilet cleaner." Nicky is going to college to study medicine. "It's phenomenal," Lauren said about working so closely with her dad. "I've learned a lot of valu...
Azucar Cuban Cuisine to open in 2 weeks ... maybe Self-described "humble chef and dishwasher" Nicholas Vasquez says he expects Azúcar Cuban Cuisine on Schraalenburgh Road in Closter to open the second week in January. His daughter, Lauren, is "the proud owner," he says. Of course, Vasquez reminds, he expected the restaurant, which seats 135, to have opened in August. And then September. And then ... When it does finally open, there will be a lounge by the bar, with lots of Cuban reading material, a salsa band on the weekends, a man rolling cigars at a special table, a table where dominoes can be played ("If you don't know how to play, we'll teach you!") palm trees with dried fronds ("I don't have to water them!"), a private dining room and, of course Cuban food, including "El Cubano Grande" ($11.95), a pressed Cuban sandwich, the sandwich with which he beat Bobby Flay in Food Network's "Throwdown." Also o...
